U.S. researchers invent nanoscale skin care emulsions to prevent skin cancer

External skin care lotions containing nanoparticles penetrate the skin for gene therapy.

According to a report from the American "Pop Science" website on July 2nd, researchers at Northwestern University have recently announced a groundbreaking research result: Gene therapy with a topical skin cream containing nanoparticles. This may sound strange, but it will make the future of gene therapy simple and patients may not need to give injections or take drugs.

Researchers Amy Pall and Chad Mirkin combined chemistry and dermatology to create a nucleic acid block that is less than 1/1000 of the human hair. When dispersed in a topical skin care lotion for human skin, these nucleic acids will penetrate all skin layers and penetrate deeply into the epidermis. Once they enter the skin cells, they will selectively deal with disease-causing genes. Nucleic acid blocks can distinguish between healthy genes and mutated genes, specifically attacking those genes that can cause cancer, so it can be used to prevent certain types of skin cancer.

This type of novel nucleic acid structure is actually a small interfering RNA, also called siRNA. They can be customized to regulate gene activity and can also be programmed to deal with specific genes.

The researchers studied epidermal growth factor receptors that are related to the generation of certain types of cancer and found that RNA particles surround small tiny gold nanoparticles, forming dense areas. The resulting "nanostructures" penetrate completely into the skin and RNA is responsible for the breakdown of the epidermal growth factor receptor gene. Researchers will develop nano-emulsion emulsions on rats and human skin. No side effects were found after one month. Mirkin said in a statement, "The skin is an insurmountable barrier, which is why the previous compound that could effectively deal with mutant genes could not be developed."

With the advent of this epoch-making research, people just need to apply nano-emulsion emulsions on the skin like general skin care lotions to perform gene therapy.
