Algae can be used as biofuels and has high treatment efficiency in wastewater treatment. A team led by scientists Meenakshi Bhattacharjee and Evan Siemann of Rice University use nutrients in wastewater as algal growth raw materials while growing algae. It can absorb nitrogen, phosphorus and other elements in the waste water and filter the water. Algae can be used as biofuels after they are grown. After 14 weeks in a sewage treatment plant in Houston, scientists discovered that some algae could consume 90% of the nitride and 50% of the phosphorus in the wastewater after 14 weeks.
Previously, Kansas scientists performed similar experiments in the area, and the results showed that this algae consumes less phosphorus, which may be due to the colder weather. This processing technology is more suitable for the warm climate of Texas. The scientific team is currently testing how different variables affect the outcome of the process and evaluating the cost-effectiveness ratio of this system. The results of the research paper have been published in the recent Algae academic journal.
