According to the Nikkei BP quoted Tim Schweikert, president of GE division, they have developed a marine engine based on small aircraft technology, which is different from the mainstream diesel technology. This gas turbine is more lightweight and environmentally friendly, but its efficiency is comparable to that of diesel engines.
Tim said that the new engine will lose 80% of its weight and it will be reduced by 30%. Taking a container ship as an example, the volume of cargo can increase by about 7%. As for technical details, Tim did not disclose too much, but said that they used the "combined cycle" approach, which uses the waste heat generated by the gas turbines to generate steam, and then drives the turbines to generate electricity again.
However, due to various reasons, there is still a big gap between China's gas turbines and the international advanced level, and no real industry has yet been formed. At present, AVIC Power is developing four gas turbines QD128, QC185, QC70, and R0110, of which R0110 is a heavy-duty gas turbine, QD128 and QC185 are mid-range power gas turbines, and QC70 is a low-power gas turbine.
