New super-biological computer models come out

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a source of energy for human cells, can also be used to drive next-generation supercomputers. This new discovery by Canadian researchers is expected to open the door for the development of book-size supercomputers. Compared with traditional supercomputers that occupy hundreds of square meters, this idea is really tempting.

An international research team led by Dan Nicklaw, director of the Department of Bioengineering at McGill University in Canada, published a paper in the recently published "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" that said they have developed a super-biological computer model that can be used with large-scale supercomputers. The same parallel computing approach handles information quickly and accurately, but the overall size is much smaller and the energy consumption is lower because it runs on proteins that are present in all living cells.

The circuit of this super-biological computer model looks a bit like looking at a busy and orderly city road map from the air - a 1.5-centimeter chip is the "city," but it is not the traditional microchip that runs on etched "roads." Medium current drives electrons, but short strings of proteins (researchers call them "biological agents"). They are driven by ATP and operate in a controlled manner.

The biologically-driven supercomputer does not dissipate heat like a conventional supercomputer. Therefore, there is no need for cooling. It is not only more energy-efficient, but also more sustainable. Although current models have been able to effectively handle complex classical mathematical problems through parallel computing, researchers have also realized that there is still a long way to go before the development of full-scale functional super-biological computers.

Nicklau said that it is difficult to say when the full-scale super-biological computer will come out, but to deal with bigger and more complex problems, combine their equipment with traditional computers to form a hybrid system or a very Good solution. At present, they are using a variety of ways to advance relevant research. (Reporter Chen Dan)
