At the 240th National Conference of the American Chemical Society held recently, researchers described the solar cell, which can not only achieve automatic cleaning, but also increase the efficiency of light energy generation and reduce the maintenance cost of large-scale solar energy equipment.
This automatic cleaning technology is mainly to deposit a transparent thin layer of electrically sensitive material on the glass or transparent plastic, covering the panel. The sensor monitors the dust level on the panel surface. When the dust density reaches a certain level, it will be energized. The charge will emit a kind of dust-repelling wave on the surface of the material, pushing the dust to the edge of the protection panel. Mazamda said that this technology can remove about 90% of the dust on the panel within 2 minutes, and the entire program will only consume a small amount of electricity generated by the panel itself.
Dr. Mahler Mazamuda of Boston University who led the study said that only 4.05 grams of dust per square meter can reduce solar energy conversion by 40%. This self-cleaning battery panel does not even require water or machinery and is ideally suited for use in areas where dust and particle contamination are highly concentrated.
While working at NASA, Mazamda and his research team have developed a technology for automatic solar panel cleaning on the Moon and Mars missions. "There is no doubt that Mars is a dusty, dry environment. Solar panels must provide energy to astronauts roaming the space and ensure that the controllable robots performing future missions will not be affected by dust."
With the popularization of solar energy, the use of this technology will increase. From 2003 to 2008, the use of solar or photovoltaic panels increased by 50%, and it is predicted that at least 25% will be added each year in the future. At present, the market share of solar panels is about 24 billion U.S. dollars. Only 0.04% of the world's electricity comes from solar cells. If solar energy is produced in only 4% of the world's deserts, it can fully meet the world's energy needs.
