Scientists from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory said that they are developing a cost model for fuel cells that will help users better evaluate the cost-effectiveness of various fuel cell technologies. Through the development of a computing tool, the production costs and potential benefits of various fuel cell technologies can be quantified. At present, researchers are seeking US$20 billion in R&D funding from the US Department of Energy.
It is reported that scientists will conduct a detailed assessment of the design and production of two common fuel cell technologies: solid oxide and thin-film battery technology. At the same time, the research will also cover the analysis of fuel cells in the static operation process, such as providing main power and backup power for commercial buildings and residential buildings.
The measurement tool is mainly based on the software platform for analysis, through the collection, analysis of various timely data, design data, and cost data to provide manufacturers and builders with the best cost-benefit estimates, thereby maximizing yield. The technical research and development of this project is expected to last for 5 years and will be available within 3 years.
