High-performance and practical high-temperature gas-cooled reactor fuel mass production

Japan Atomic Energy Research and Development Agency and Atomic Fuel Industry Corporation have jointly developed a design technology that enables future high-temperature gas-cooled reactors to use granular uranium fuel with significantly higher combustion than previous high-temperature engineering test research reactor (HTTR) fuel performance. It has passed the neutron irradiation test of the Republic of Kazakhstan, confirmed that this new fuel has a high degree of neutron irradiation stability, and established high-quality mass production technology.

The high-temperature gas-cooled reactor is a reactor with excellent safety. However, if the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor is to be practical, compared with the current HTTR fuel (combustion degree of 33GWd / t), it needs to have the ability to safely extract 3 times (about 100GWd / t) uranium combustion energy .

This research team established for the first time the design technology and high-quality mass production technology of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor fuel. (Reporter Chen Chao in Japan)
