First CCUS project of domestic coal-fired power plant started in Sinopec Shengli Oilfield

Recently, the National Twelfth Five-Year National Science and Technology Support Program - Large-Scale Coal-fired Power Plant Flue Gas CO2 Capture, Displacement, Storage (CCUS) Technology Development and Application Demonstration Project was launched in Shengli Oilfield, the first domestic coal-fired power plant CCUS project.

Carbon dioxide is the main greenhouse gas. Excessive emissions will cause global warming. Among many emission sources, coal-fired power plants have the largest amount of carbon dioxide emissions, accounting for 42% of the total emissions. At the same time, coal-fired power plants have more concentrated and fixed emission sources. Therefore, coal-fired power plants are the main areas of application of large-scale CCUS technology. In the current major fields of application, carbon dioxide flooding has become a key technology for scaled-up CCUS at this stage due to its good economic benefits, geological storage, large application potential, and relatively mature technology.

The overall research objective of the CCUS project for coal-fired power plants is to develop integrated technologies for low-energy capture, storage, and flooding through a series of technological breakthroughs such as carbon dioxide flue gas capture, safe transportation, storage, and flooding of large-scale coal-fired power plants. Build a large-scale full-chain CCUS demonstration project.

The project passed the feasibility study of the Ministry of Science and Technology project in December 2011. The research period of the project is from January 2012 to December 2015. It mainly includes five research topics, which are undertaken by the Research Institute of Nanhua Group, Peking University and Shengli Oilfield Company respectively. Under the leadership of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the project team is organized by the group company and Shengli Oilfield Branch is the group leader unit. After the completion of the project, a carbon dioxide capture and purification and transmission demonstration project of 500,000 tons/year to 1 million tons/year, and a carbon dioxide flood storage project of 200,000 tons/year to 300,000 tons/year will be completed to form a large-scale coal-fired power plant smoke. Integrated technology of integrated capture and flooding of carbon dioxide, flooding and storage, and economic evaluation technology provide engineering technology and experience for carbon emission reduction in China.
