Brazil's fertilizer is heavily dependent on imports

According to statistics released recently by the Brazilian National Fertilizer Association (ANDA), in 2013, Brazil imported 21.619 million tons of chemical fertilizers, an increase of 10.6% over the previous year. The import volume reached 70% of the country's chemical fertilizer consumption; the import value reached US$8.885 billion. , an increase of 3.51% over the previous year.

Every year, Brazil imports large amounts of chemical fertilizers. The dependence on chemical fertilizer imports is 70%, and the dependence on potassium ore is as high as 90%. Brazil's National Fertilizer Association said that Brazil's fertilizer imports will reach $13 billion in 2018. If Brazil's local fertilizer production project is progressing smoothly, it is expected to reduce the import of chemical fertilizers by 9 million tons in 2018 and cut imports by US$4.5 billion.

It is said that Vale is carrying out the construction of the Carnalita Potash Project in Sergipe, Brazil, and that once it is completed, the annual output will reach 1.2 million tons. Relevant experts predict that the project will enable Brazil to reduce its imports of potassium ore by 17 billion U.S. dollars over the next 30 years, which will help to improve Brazil's fertilizer trade deficit. However, the disputes concerning the collection of goods circulation service tax (ICMS) in the cities of Capella and Japaratouba involved in this project have been disputed, and the development of potash projects has lags behind.

Brazil's Vale, Brazilian MbAC Fertilizer, and Galvani have phosphoric acid projects. Among them, the Galvani company's phosphoric acid project in Minas and César states will have an annual capacity of 3 million tons. If these projects are effective, Brazil will reduce the import of phosphoric acid by 50%, and the status of fertilizer trade deficit is expected to be further improved.
