With the Amazon Amazon Key causing a sensation in residential delivery, lock manufacturer Latch is working with the intercom company Comelit to solve the smart apartment access problem.
Smart lock company Latch announced its partnership with safe walkie-talkie manufacturer Comelit on Tuesday. Latch currently offers three different locks, including a mortise lock and a deadbolt model. Comelit is an Italian company that produces walkie-talkies, as well as home automation and access control systems.
With Amazon Amazon Key causing a sensation in residential delivery, the two companies are looking to improve automation and smart access to apartments and commercial buildings to collaborate on smart apartment access issues.
Many cities require walkie-talkies to provide hard-wired connections in separate apartments to ensure that residents can access emergency services through the front door. This makes intelligent access a challenge because an application will not meet the hard-wired requirements. Latch and Comelit proposed a system in which non-residents (shippers, dog walkers) can access the Comeelit intercom panel that is hardwired to the building via the Latch app.
In this case, the Comelit input panel will display the apartment number. The delivery person or guest can call the user's device and send an alert to the user's mobile phone via the Latch app and the hard-wired Comeelit intercom panel in the apartment. The user will then see the person requesting access and choose whether to let them enter.
Buildings typically handle two or three separate systems to manage access: one for public areas, one for separate apartments, and third for external intercom systems. Latch and Comelit want to combine these features into one access system.
Latch and Comelit plan to launch their combined products in 2018.
