Do you dare to eat genetically modified foods?

Yesterday, the second China Gene Industry Cluster Conference was held in 2008. Over 300 world-leading scientists and business representatives from around the world gathered in the small town of Sanshui. On the same day, it signed four projects, the China South China Medical Device Corporation Incubation Center, the National Food and Drug Administration Guangzhou Medical Device Supervision and Inspection Center Three Water Center Project, the South China Gene Valley, and the Nobel Research Center.

In addition, in response to international controversy over the harmful effects of genetically modified foods, Dr. Avraham Hershko, the Nobel Prize winner in chemistry in 2004, responded yesterday that it is stupid not to allow the sale of genetically modified foods. Genetically modified foods are very resistant to fungi, are safe, and should be applied and promoted.

AIDS vaccine and cervical cancer vaccine are all in development

The 2nd China Gene Industry Cluster Conference was held in Sanshui on the 7th. It covered policies and regulations concerning the public health and safety measures of vaccines, the latest breakthroughs in vaccine research for all major human diseases, the development of new infectious diseases and vaccines, and the development of cutting-edge technologies, and animals. There are more than 30 thematic discussions on the development of aquatic vaccines and international project cooperation.

The reporter learned from the conference that at present, out of 37 statutory infectious diseases, 22 diseases are available for vaccine prevention and vaccines with at least 3 diseases are under development. In addition, a large number of new vaccines such as the AIDS vaccine, cervical cancer vaccine, and Helicobacter pylori vaccine are under development.

According to relevant sources, with the development of society and the improvement of the social and economic level, people are paying more and more attention to health. The immunization plan is a disease prevention work with the least input and the most benefit. It is an important measure to implement the national “prevention oriented” policy and protect vulnerable populations. It is hoped that this conference will promote the integration of the Chinese vaccine industry with international standards and accelerate the upgrading of vaccine products and biotechnology in China.

South China Gene Valley settled in Foshan Sanshui yesterday

At 6 o'clock last night, the first national medical device industry base in South China successfully signed a contract with South China Gene Valley. On the same day, there were four projects of China Medical Device South China Incubation Center, the State Food and Drug Administration Guangzhou Medical Device Supervision and Inspection Center Sanmo Center, and the Nobel Research Center.

An interview with this reporter

Dr Avraham Hershko

"(Sanshui longevity gene) can be studied if you can, or you will use it later."

This project of genetically modified foods, I think, is a good idea. As far as I know, the harm of genetically modified foods is very small, but in some parts of Europe, they are not allowed to sell genetically modified foods. I think this is stupid. ”

The financial tsunami will affect the global economy. Will it be difficult to see the future when investing in genetic technology? At present, both domestic and international debates about the pros and cons of genetically modified foods, our reporter conducted a dialogue on a series of hot topics with Dr. Avraham Hershko, winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004.

Q: What are the advantages of China's development of genetic technology and what needs to be improved?

A: I have observed that China is developing rapidly. The Chinese people have ambitions, and they have very good talents. With government-supported economic policies, these are its advantages. There are many colleges and universities in China, but the top is only ten. Around the home, I think there should be a broader research base and a better school can attract better high-tech companies to come to China.

Q: I heard that you have a plan to study "longevity genes" in Sanshui. Can you tell us about this project?

A: I have heard that people in China live long lives. However, Sanshui is very special. People have longer life spans than other parts of China. They are not only long-lived, but people's quality of life is also high. I think this may be a good one. The opportunity to study this case, what caused the longevity here? Is there a good gene or a good way to live? And how to promote it to the general public is worth studying. I think this is not a short-term project. If it can be studied, or you will use it later, haha.

Q: How long do you expect to study this project?

Answer: Certainly it takes many years, maybe 50 years, it is hard to say. First you have to confirm the genes. It takes time. Then you need to convert or repair. It also takes time. For me, I started ubiquitin research 40 years ago. I gradually saw some results after 30 years. So I said that it is going to take a long time to do research, but it is a certainty. Yes, if you never start, you will never arrive.

Question: In addition, I would also like to know that there are some disputes over genetically modified foods in the world. What do you think about this issue?

A: I think it is a good idea for the project of genetically modified foods. As far as I know, the harm of genetically modified foods is very small, but in some parts of Europe, they are not allowed to sell genetically modified foods. I think this is stupid. We can minimize or even reduce its danger.

Usually, these genetically modified foods are very resistant to fungi. This is good and will not harm us. We know that food prices are now rising, but if we can find a relatively inexpensive way to make foods, the price of food can also be lowered, and genetic modification is a way. At the same time, GM technology can make foods prevent pests without the need for spraying pesticides, which is also an advantage. In general, I support GM foods. Of course, you need to check carefully, but to date, as far as I know, GM foods are safe and should be applied and promoted.
